Elopements & Intimate Weddings in Croatia for UK & US Couples
Elopements vs Intimate Weddings: What’s the Difference?
If you’re travelling from the UK or the US to get married in Croatia, you’ll often see the terms elopement, micro wedding, and intimate wedding used interchangeably. While they share similarities, there are some important differences.
An elopement usually focuses on just the two of you (or a very small group), with minimal structure and no pressure to follow traditions. An intimate or micro wedding includes a small guest list of close family or friends, while still keeping the day relaxed, personal, and meaningful.
Both options are ideal if you want to step away from large, traditional weddings and focus on the experience rather than the schedule.
I absolutely love to photograph elopement's and micro weddings, as it lets me build a a much better relationship with you and your guests, which in turn means better more authentic images.

Elopements in Croatia for UK & US Couples
Croatia has become an increasingly popular elopement destination for couples travelling from the UK and the US.
Croatia is famous for its coastline that's for sure, but it has so much more to offer if you are searching for a unique elopement location. From the mountain ranges and UNESCO Heritage sites, to amazing waterfalls and award winning vineyards. Direct flights from the UK and the US make planning a destination elopement here far easier than many couples expect.
I’m originally from London in the UK and now live in Croatia, which gives me a good understanding of both sides of the planning process — what it’s like to organise a wedding from abroad, and how things work once you’re actually here. For many UK and US couples, having someone local who also understands their expectations makes the experience feel far more relaxed.

Civil, Religious & Symbolic Ceremonies in Croatia
There are three types of weddings you can have in Croatia — civil, religious, and symbolic. Each comes with its own rules and level of flexibility, particularly for couples planning from abroad.
In short:
- Civil ceremonies are legally binding and internationally recognised, but involve the most paperwork.
- Religious ceremonies are only possible after a civil ceremony and require additional permissions.
- Symbolic ceremonies are not legally binding, but offer complete freedom and can be personalised in any way you wish. Legal formalities are usually handled in your home country either before or after the wedding in Croatia.
Rather than duplicating information here, I’ve written a separate guide that explains each option in detail: Civil vs Religious vs Symbolic Weddings in Croatia
Why Croatia Is an Ideal Elopement Destination
For UK and US couples, Croatia offers a wonderful balance of beauty, accessibility and value.
You’ll find stunning scenery, historic architecture, excellent food and wine and a relaxed Mediterranean pace of life. Whether you’re exchanging vows on a beach by the Adriatic or in a quiet historic town, Croatia allows you to focus on the moment rather than expectations or traditions.
Choosing the Best Time of Year to Elope in Croatia
One of the biggest advantages of eloping in Croatia is flexibility.
Spring and autumn are particularly popular with UK and US couples looking for warm weather, softer light, and fewer crowds. Summer offers slightly longer days, but come with seriously hot weather and a lot more people.
Your choice of date will influence everything from atmosphere and privacy to travel costs and overall comfort.
Intimate Weddings in Croatia for UK & US Couples
If you want to share your destination wedding with a small group of your closest people, an intimate wedding in Croatia offers the perfect balance between celebration and simplicity.
These weddings allow you to slow the day down and actually spend time with your family & friends, rather than rushing from one staged moment to the next.
What Is an Intimate or Micro Wedding in Croatia?
An intimate or micro wedding typically includes anywhere from just a few guests up to around 10–30 people.
This approach keeps the celebration personal and meaningful, it gives you time to talk to the friends and family that are there to share the day with you. You really do get the opportunity to create a beautiful wedding experience in a destination you love.

Greater Flexibility When Choosing a Venue
Smaller guest numbers open up far more venue options.
Private villas, boutique hotels, restaurants, boats, and outdoor locations are all realistic possibilities for intimate weddings in Croatia — many of which simply wouldn’t work for larger groups.
Budget & Travel Considerations
With fewer guests, many couples choose to invest more into what matters most to them — whether that’s photography, a special location, or turning the wedding into a longer Croatian experience. With less people this type of personalisation becomes much easier to arrange and adds even more magic to your day
For UK and US couples, this often means combining the wedding with a relaxed holiday, rather than planning a single, tightly scheduled day or two.
