Travel to Split, Croatia — A Practical Guide for UK & US Wedding Couples
Why Split Is a Perfect Destination Wedding Base
Split is one of the most beautiful and accessible wedding destinations in Croatia’s Dalmatia region. With its UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace, sun-lit waterfront (the Riva), historic stone streets, and easy access to islands like Hvar and Brač, Split perfectly blends ancient charm with Mediterranean elegance.
Condé Nast Traveler has named Split as one of Europe’s leading destination wedding locations. As a professional wedding photographer originally from the UK now living in Croatia full-time, I can tell you: once you’re here, it’s easy to see why.
For UK and US couples looking to elope or hold a small intimate wedding, Split offers both iconic photo opportunities and relaxed celebrations that are unforgettable but feel very personal.
Getting to Split from the UK & US
Flying to Split from the UK
· Split has direct flights from multiple UK airports (LHR, MAN, GLA, etc.) during peak season and from LHR/GLA all year round.
· Outside summer, you can reach Split via direct flights to Zagreb or major European hubs such as Rome, Amsterdam, or Frankfurt and connect onward.
Flying to Split from the US
Until recently, most US couples reached Split via a European hub such as London, Amsterdam, or Frankfurt. That’s now changed.
From spring 2025 onwards, United Airlines operates seasonal direct flights from Newark (EWR) to Split (SPU) three times per week.
Why this should make life much simpler for elopements and intimate weddings:
· Fewer connections (and less luggage stress)
· Easier travel with wedding attire — never check your wedding dress, always carry it as hand luggage
· More realistic short trips for guests, making it easier for them to say yes
· Much simpler arrival timelines for ceremony days
For couples not flying from the East Coast, Newark is well connected domestically, making this one-stop route far easier than multiple European transfers
Outside the direct flight season, Split is still easily reached via major European hubs or via Zagreb with a short onward flight or drive.
Entry Requirements for UK & US Citizens
UK Citizens
- No visa required for short stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period (Croatia is now part of the Schengen area).
- Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date and issued within the last 10 years.
US Citizens
- US passport holders currently do not need a visa for short stays up to 90 days in Croatia/Schengen.
ETIAS — What You Need to Know (from late 2026)
Starting after summer 2026, travellers from visa-exempt countries — including the UK and US — will need a digital travel authorisation called ETIAS before arrival.
· Similar to the USA’s ESTA, ETIAS is not a visa and does not replace visas for longer stays.
· Apply online well before travel to avoid border delays.
· The launch date may shift; check official government sites before booking.
Finally, you may ask, can we get married in Croatia and what are the legal requirements for UK & US couples. The short answer is yes and if you want to read more about how and what the options are you can read my guide.

Schengen Rules & Stay Limits
Croatia is part of the Schengen Zone:
· UK & US visitors can stay up to 90 days within a 180-day period across the Schengen area.
· Multiple trips across Schengen countries count together.
· Extended stays may require a different visa.
This is important if you’re planning extended stays for dress fittings, vendor meetings, or a long honeymoon.
Arrival & Transport in Split
From Split Airport (SPU)
· The airport is approximately 45 minutes from Split city centre.
· Options for arrival:
- Private transfer (recommended for wedding guests)
Local tip: Honestly, avoid taxis unless pre-booked. Overcharging at the airport is still common, especially for international visitors
Practical Travel Tips for Couples & Guests
Travel Insurance
Essential for weddings abroad — make sure it covers travel delays, health, and wedding-specific items such as dresses or rings.
Money in Croatia
· Credit cards are widely accepted in Split and most coastal Croatia. Many venues now allow electronic tipping (~10% is standard).
· Cash is still useful for small shops, for tips or local markets. Croatia now uses the Euro, which simplifies things alot.
Timing & Seasons
Split enjoys long, sunny days from May through October, with each month offering different advantages:
· May–June: Warm and lively with soft natural light
· July–August: Peak season, hotter temperatures, busier tourist spots
· September–October: Warm seas, fewer crowds
I personally recommend shoulder months, especially late September to early October — balancing weather, light, and crowd levels beautifully. You can read more about The best months to get married in Croatia here.

Costs & Pricing — What to Expect in Split
Croatia was historically very affordable, but prices have risen since Covid. While still generally below London or New York levels, expect higher restaurant and service costs than some European destinations like Spain or Italy.
This isn’t a reason to be alarmed — it simply reflects the quality and popularity of this stunning region
