Why Dubrovnik Is a Perfect Destination Wedding Base
Dubrovnik is one of Croatia’s most iconic wedding destinations. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town, ancient city walls, and sparkling Adriatic views create a picture-perfect backdrop for small, intimate weddings and elopements. The winding stone streets, historic architecture, and sunlit terraces combine old-world charm with a Mediterranean vibe that’s hard to match.
As a professional wedding photographer from the UK now living in Croatia, I can tell you that city offers couples a unique mix of romance, culture and practicality — if you know how to navigate its quirks.
For couples planning an intimate wedding or elopement in Dubrovnik, understanding how to actually get here — and how the city works once you arrive — is a huge part of creating a relaxed, stress-free wedding experience. From airport transfers to navigating the Old Town on foot, these practical details can quietly shape how your wedding day (and the days around it) feel. Getting to Dubrovnik from the UK & US
From the UK
- Direct flights are available from London (LHR), Manchester (MAN), and Glasgow (GLA) during peak season.
- Outside summer, most UK airports connect via hubs such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Zagreb, with onward flights to Dubrovnik.
From the US
- United airlines flies daily from Newark directly to Dubrovnik from May through to September. Or you can connect via a European hub like London, Amsterdam or Frankfurt.
- Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is roughly 30 minutes from the Old Town and is served by several seasonal direct flights from East Coast airports.

Arrival & Transport in Dubrovnik
While logistics in a 16th-century city can feel like drama, if you book a reputable transfer from DBV airport and a porter, it’s actually quite painless. Transfer times from the airport to the Old Town walls is about 30minutes, but can be slightly longer in peak season.
Getting to the Old Town
Guests are dropped off at the city walls. From there, you can:
- Walk to your hotel or Airbnb (most locations are just minutes away).
- Meet your hotel host — some, like the Byron Dubrovnik, offer assistance with luggage and even have a guest garage.
- Hire a porter for heavy luggage.
Pro-Tip for Guests: "The Old Town is a pedestrian-only zone. If you’re staying inside the walls, (which I highly recommend), your transfer will drop you at Pile Gate or Ploče Gate. I always recommend booking a 'Porter Service' if you have more than one suitcase—those limestone steps are beautiful but can be brutal on luggage wheels.
Parking & Cars
- Since June 2025 the roads directly around the outside of the old town are a restricted zone, you need to be a local, in a taxi or have your accommodation register your number plate to drive there, or you will be sent a fine.
- Parking near the Old Town is challenging and expensive (think 20euro an hour if you can find a space). Street parking is limited and most spaces are private.
- If your hotel doesn’t offer a garage, consider leaving cars at the airport or in a long-term parking space outside the Old Town at say Gruž. (although you will need to take a taxi back to the Old Town from there)
Other Transport Options
- Airport shuttle services or private transfers are highly recommended for weddings.
- Avoid taxis unless pre-booked — rates can be very unpredictable.
- For exploring outside Dubrovnik, rental cars are useful, but within the Old Town, walking is the only option.
- If you are wondering how all of this could impact your wedding, you can read my guide to getting married in Dubrovnik here.

Practical Travel Tips for Couples & Guests
Travel Insurance
Croatia is ridiculously safe even walking at night isn't an issue, however travel Insurance is highly recommended — particularly for weddings abroad, to cover cancellations, delays or lost items.
Money
- Credit cards are widely accepted in Dubrovnik, but cash is useful for smaller shops, tips, and certain venues.
- The currency is Euro (€), which simplifies spending for European guests.
Pro Tip: Prices in the Old Town can now mirror London or New York levels. While most places take cards (contactless is everywhere), keep about €50 in cash for small tips or the odd 'ice-cream-only' stall.
Timing & Seasons
- May–June: warm, vibrant and less crowded.
- July–August: peak season, hot and busy. Did I mention it was hot already ?
- September–October: mild weather with fewer crowds — my personal recommendation for intimate weddings.
Dubrovnik changes completely with the seasons; check my guide on the Best Time of Year for a Croatian Wedding to see why I prefer the shoulder months
Luggage & Footwear
- Dubrovnik streets are cobbled; comfortable shoes are a must, especially if walking from drop-off to hotels, save those killer heels for the main event.
- Consider hiring a porter for wedding dresses, photography gear or other heavy items.
Pro Tip: If you’re looking for a way to keep your guests entertained while you’re off taking photos, I highly recommend sharing this 72 Hours in Dubrovnik guide by my friends at The Byron. it’s the perfect itinerary for those who want to see the best of the city without wasting any time.

Inspiration & Photo Locations
Dubrovnik is a small, historic city — and that’s part of its magic — but it also means certain areas can feel busy, especially in peak season. For couples planning an intimate wedding or elopement, knowing where (and when) to step away from the crowds can completely change how the day feels.
Over the years, I’ve come to know quieter corners of the city that offer the same atmosphere and beauty, without the intensity of the main routes. If this is something that matters to you, I’ve shared more about these lesser-known spots in my guide to hidden photo locations in Dubrovnik.
For couples drawn to a more open, elevated feel, Mount Srđ above Dubrovnik is a perfect example of how stepping just outside the Old Town can completely change the atmosphere of an elopement day. With sweeping views over the city and the Adriatic, it offers space, calm and perspective — especially at sunrise or sunset. I’ve shared more about what a Mount Srđ elopement can look like, including timing and practical considerations, in a separate guide.
Planning your arrival and knowing where to capture those moments is key to a stress-free experience.
Additional Notes for Couples
- Dubrovnik has become more expensive post-Covid, particularly in summer. While costs are lower than London or New York, expect higher prices than other inland Croatian destinations.
- Small intimate weddings are easier to plan when you arrive with a clear understanding of Old Town logistics.

Dubrovnik is magical for intimate weddings and elopements — and with a little planning, your day can be effortless for both you and your guests. From drop-offs at the city walls to hidden photo spots and mountain views, this city is full of inspiration for an unforgettable celebration.
Planning the logistics is the first step; finding the right space is the next. It focuses on spots that offer privacy and character, away from the typical tourist hot spots.
